Mumbai and its caretakers, the Taak-reys
Politicians, journalism and law (judiciary) are subjects that I never like to talk/write about. I have highest level of disregard for all three as of date. I don't have and won't have a voter card, I fear media more than the goons, and the law... Well, what can I say about something that doesn't exist!

Yesterday, one of the Taak-rey had a rally, speech or speech rally at some place in Bombay (Ignorant me, as usual, not aware of the location). There were some 10 buses spotted on highway full of all kind of people (marathi, non-marathi and *.*) who appeared to be mass borrowed/bought from some agency. As their bus was moving through the roads, they were chanting slogans in Hindi and passing comments on passerby(s) people and vehicles. I am not sure how many of that audience would have understood whatever (R)Taak-rey spoke, especially for language incompatibility reasons :p

Law was present around in uniforms protecting the people in bus. Media was there to record-it-once and play-it-all giving them the fame they crave for. So wrong! Don't give them any space and air. Ignore them and they shall fade away.

Every community which is open, not only survives but blooms to fullest. The communities which have close door policies find it difficult fit in with the rest of the world. India could and can rise to highest level because of its openness and adaptability to the people who come in. Invaders of this country ultimately becoming its citizen. Something worth thinking about.

I remember something being mentioned in Surabhi serial of 90s (Renuka Shahane and Siddharth kak) about Shivaji origin(-)ally coming from Sisodia dynasty of Rajasthan. With histories getting edited for personal fancies, who knows the fact. But if this happens to be true then what happens to the party that breathes, eats and (ab)uses the name of this great "maratha" warrior.

Our Taak-reys are so addicted to the infrastructure, luxury and power in Mumbai that none of them would even like to live in a city like Pune, forget remote areas of Maharashtra. God bless Mumbai.

nice thoughts... :)
I liked your point that "Ignore them and they shall fade away."
But media has to play a major role here. But media is also not seem to be unbiased. Problem with media today is that it can fuel any news which help the media itself to come to the limelight. :(

Fortunately media today is present in various forms. So...
"Kuchh to (B)log kahenge... "

There was a time when I used to hold journalism and media channels in high regard. There was a time when I had less difficulty in believing the truthfulness of news elements. Today, heart cries when I see the news-makers not respecting privacies of ordinary individuals and telling lies for wrong reasons.

Media is powerful and needs to act responsibly (Remember that spiderman wala punchline?). I am sorry to say, they don't.

The Judiciary is still intact, or at least I hope it is. Because if not, that's going to be the final straw. I can't say much for politicians, but journalism is one of those things that just works because of the way it is. Journalism may suffer from bias, but as long as there are enough biased journalists to cover both sides of the story, it should be alright :-)

On a related note, Saltwater Blues (SwB) made a nice observation about these recent events in one of his posts here (http://saltwaterblues.blogspot.com/2008/05/so-tell-me-why-do-people-ordinary.html).

Judiciary, what I notice, gives verdict but misses out on justice. It follows rulebooks that have been 'patched' a million times so far. I remember one thumb rule of programming quoted by Kruse et al in their book 'data structures and program design in C', which says "If more than 10% of a program must be modified, then it is time to rewrite the program completely". I guess, it applies to the law and rulebooks too.

I am sorry, I don't mean to sound so pessimistic. My interactions with each one of the three above, have been very disheartening. May be I should not have written this blog in first place. But then I did felt that we all have to do our small bits whenever possible. May be for the same reason, I could not appreciate what the author wrote in the blog you pointed out.

We have roles to play. We have taken whatever was given by our fathers to us and we have to act responsibly about what we are passing to coming generation. We are the link. At times we need ask questions and seek right answers otherwise later when our children will ask us questions, we won't have any answers for them except the word "sorry".

>> I don't have and won't have a voter card

That's a dangerous mind set, my dear. You are loosing the only chance to fight against all the problems. Agreed that, there are very few or no good politicians left. But, that's again my and your and everyone's problem. What will one achieve by walking away from them ?

Only very few people seem to be, a little bit aware of the state of the affairs. And, if all of them sit together and decide to walk away...!!! Why did they waste their time by sitting together to discuss the issues in the first place, then ?

May be I think different. Individual stuff.

That voting thingy is not the chance/way of fighting the problem (as per me). I don't subscribe to the current model of democracy and I don't participate in it. The problem is not with the people as many perceive (again, as per me) but the way the whole structure (democracy) is set up. And then we have our society, community to add to the complications.

Okay, on the people front, there is one not so good experience to share. One of my friend once told me that he/she would enjoy power when it comes to him/her and wouldn't mind taking bribe if it's not hurting anyone. Taking bribe doesn't hurt anyone? That person is a well educated sensible fellow coming from a respectable family background. I don't think this was taught to him/her by his/her parents. Is it society thing?

There are some questions whose answers are pretty difficult ones to accept :)

What will one achieve by not participating in it ? Even to change the current model to something else, you have to participate in it. Either follow Nepal's Prachanda way or Hitler way.

>> The problem is with the way the whole structure (democracy) is set up
Yes, problem is with the way whole structure is set up. But to solve the problem, don't you think we should participate in it ?

>>That person is a well educated sensible fellow

Oh ! "Educated" and "Sensible" are very tricky words for me. If he is both educated and sensible and talks about hurt-less bribes, probably there is something wrong in your perception :-)

That sensible thing was mentioned because I haven't met anyone who is 100% perfect so far. This was the only one point where I had serious disagreement with my buddy. Other things are pretty much neat.

Not sure about participation needs for the change stuff. Everyone has their way of getting the job done. Am not in for Prachanda/Hitler way for this for sure :).
